If you are not quite sure how to care for your smile during your pregnancy, we are here to help you! There are many things you can do to maintain a strong and successful oral health, and those things are:

Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is vital during your pregnancy, so make sure you brush your teeth twice a day, floss your smile once a day, and rinse your mouth with mouthwash daily. As you do these things, it’s very important that you use the right tools. The best tools to use are those that have been approved by the American Dental Association.

Talk to your dentist
When you come into our office for your six month checkup, please remember to tell our team about your pregnancy and about any medications you are taking. Then, we can treat your smile accordingly and can look for specific dental issues that come along with pregnancy.

Watch for changes in the mouth
Pregnancy can make many changes in the mouth, and some of those changes could be dangerous. So, please keep an eye out for red, swollen, or bleeding gums as well as red, raspberry-like sores on your gums. If you see any of these signs, please call our office and schedule an appointment immediately.

Have a healthy diet
Having a healthy diet can help you as well as your baby, so please do your best to consume the nutrients you need, like vitamins A, C, and D, protein, and calcium. Also, please refrain from snacking all day. Snacking can make you susceptible to tooth decay.

Deal with morning sickness
If you vomit frequently because of morning sickness, you need to protect your teeth from the stomach acid that can cause cavities. So, rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda and water to keep the acid under control.

If you do the mentioned five tasks, your smile will remain in tip-top shape as you grow the little bun in your oven. Dr. Thomas Alexander & Eric Cho and our team at MacArthur Family Dental care for you and your oral health, and we want to see you succeed. So, if you have any questions or if you need additional help, please remember that you can always call 714-557-0882 and talk to our dental team. We are happy to assist you!
