After a Deep Cleaning
Congratulations! You have taken the necessary steps to get your mouth healthy.
In order to effectively clean around the teeth and under the gumline comfortably, you were given local anesthetic to make the area numb. This anesthetic usually lasts on an average, around 2hrs after leaving the dental office. Because everyone’s metabolism is different, the anesthetic can last longer that those two hours. Not to panic, in some patients it can last 5hrs after leaving!
Be very careful about what you have to eat or drink while your mouth is still numb. Avoid anything too chewy so not to bite lips, tongue or cheeks and stay away from hot items such as tea, coffee or soup as your tissue and lips will not perceive temperature. We don’t want you to experience a burn or bite that you don’t feel until after the anesthetic has worn off.
Once the anesthetic has worn off, you are free to have whatever you want to eat or drink according to your preference and how you feel.
Use Warm Salt Water Rinses over the next three days or so….1 cup warm water—not too hot! and 1/2 tsp. salt. Swish for 30 seconds, spit, and repeat for a total of 1 minute swishing time. Do not have anything to eat, drink or rinse for the next 10 minutes to let the saltwater help soothe the gum tissue.
It will be very important for you to continue your careful 2 minute tooth brushing morning and evening and to use floss and/or picks as directed daily.
You may continue to see bleeding over the week but this will subside as the tissue heals and gets healthy. In order for it to heal, the plaque, or irritating factor, must be removed daily.
